Quepos, Costa Rica, truly one of the best sport fishing destinations in the world. The Pacific coast of Costa Rica is only now beginning to be developed and will be only the second large marina project located in the area. Demand for marina services in this part of Central America has gone largely unmet until now.
The project spans 35+ acres of land and water area and is being specifically designed to meet the needs of the International sport fishing and ocean going yachting community. The Marina will offer its’ customers the same type of world class marina services they have come to expect in other large scale marinas worldwide. This facility will be unique to all of Central America and will create a major destination and transit point for Pacific going yachting.
was conceived in 2001 by Harold Lovelady, a sport fishing enthusiast and home owner in Quepos, Costa Rica, to meet the unmet needs of the sport fishing community. Marina Pez Vela, S.A. was formed and the process of obtaining a marina concession was begun. John Kane joined the project in early 2003 to assist in the development and financing of the plan. The project is very highly thought of in Costa Rica as it will create a substantial number of jobs, increase tourism and bring more foreign dollars into the country. Construction is scheduled to begin later this year, and the marina should open within 2 years.
Costa Rica determined that marinas are important for the tourism business, Costa Rica’s number 1 industry. In support of developing more marinas in the country, a Marina Law was passed is the first marina project that is being developed under this new law. A number of other projects are in the planning stages in other parts of the country at this time. Based upon location, planned completion date and planned amenities, Pez Vela will likely be the only full service marina operating in Central America for years to come.
All property within 200 meters of the ocean falls under the jurisdiction of the Costa Rican government. Anyone wishing to operate a business within this area must obtain a concession to do so. The Marina Law requires the applicant to provide a number of plans, documents and studies in support of the application for a concession. has complied with all of these requirements. In June of 2004 the final Costa Rican governmental approvals were obtained and the concession was granted.
has been designed as a full service facility including up to 300 concrete floating slips accommodating craft to 150+ feet and a Dry Rack storage and forklift operation for boats up to 35 feet. The Marina will have a 150 ton Travel-Lift and state of the art maintenance facility capable of any repairs or service required.
The site will also house retail services including bait and tackle, marine parts and supplies, as well as deli, ice, sit down restaurants and other shopping. The Marina is a short walk to downtown Quepos where many other services may be found. Marina Pez Vela is also a short cab ride to the local airport and the world renowned Manuel Antonio resort area with beautiful white sandy beaches and a 1500 acre nature preserve.
The consists of a 35+ acre concession area, about 40% land and 60% water. The construction plan calls for building a large breakwater that will outline the boundaries of the Marina. Once the breakwater is in place, the basin will be dredged and the dredge spoils will be used to fill the land area. Docks and buildings will then be placed to support Marina and retail operations.
Quepos is a small town of approximately 20,000 people and there are no other suitable locations in the immediate area to build additional marinas. The local Quepos residents, as well as the entire country of Costa Rica are strongly supporting this project.
will be a world class facility designed to support the needs of serious sport fishing enthusiasts and trans-oceanic travelers and their watercraft. We hope you will be part of it.
